This portrait shows a young girl from Isleta Pueblo, a Tiwa-speaking community on the Rio Grande south of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The photographer, Charles F. Lummis, was a Los Angeles writer and editor who traveled the Southwest in the 1880s and 1890s and made many pictures of Pueblo life. His prints were sold to a national audience curious about the region's Native communities, and this one was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, which shows it was issued as a commercial image. Viewers today often read such pictures alongside Lummis's writing and the way outsiders framed Pueblo people at the time.
