Fishing boats sit tied up in Los Angeles harbor at San Pedro, idle since the people who had operated them were forced to leave. Many of those fishermen were residents of Japanese ancestry who had long worked the waters off Terminal Island. After Executive Order 9066 was signed in February 1942, the government moved people of Japanese ancestry out of coastal areas, and their boats stayed docked for the duration of the war. The War Relocation Authority made the photograph as part of its documentation of that removal, and it is now held in the Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information collection at the Library of Congress.
