Rather than a view of the city itself, this lithograph shows Christ among angels, and its captions in Spanish and French make the connection to Los Angeles through wordplay. The Spanish line, "Le Cristo a los Angeles," reads roughly as "Christ to the angels" and echoes the city's name. The New York firm of Currier & Ives produced hand-colored prints like this in large numbers from the 1850s into the early 1900s, selling them to a broad public at modest prices. This example is cataloged as number 1147 in the firm's catalog raisonné.
