A massive swordfish hangs from a hoist at Los Angeles, its long bill stretching nearly the full length of the frame, while men stand close by to show the scale of the catch. Photographs like this one circulated widely in the early 1900s, when big-game fishing off Southern California was becoming a popular spectacle and a point of civic pride. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs that Bain's agency distributed to newspapers across the country. Its caption card gives only the title and an approximate date of about 1910, so the exact day and the names of the anglers are not recorded.
