Central Park, the plaza that is now Pershing Square, sat at the corner of West Fifth Street in downtown Los Angeles when this Detroit Publishing Company view was taken, sometime between 1898 and 1914. The company, based in Detroit, produced a large catalog of hand-colored and black-and-white scenes across the United States, and its Los Angeles views show a city growing quickly on the back of railroads and citrus money. Parks like this one were built to give a rapidly expanding downtown some open green space. The record's dating comes from an old caption card and has not been verified, so the exact year remains uncertain.
