A c1904 photographic print titled *Trading with Indians* records a scene of commerce that was common at frontier trading posts and along reservation borders in the early twentieth century. Trading posts were often the main point of contact between Native communities and traders, who exchanged goods such as cloth, tools, and food for furs, crafts, and other items. Images like this one were often staged or arranged to suit popular ideas of the frontier, so it is worth looking closely at who appears in the scene, how they are posed, and what is actually changing hands. The title also reflects the language of its time.
