Few images in Soviet visual culture grouped these four men as neatly as this bas-relief, which places Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels beside Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin in one carved panel. The record dates it to 1940 and describes it as a projection transparency, a glass lantern slide made for projection before an audience. By then, Stalin's image was regularly shown alongside Lenin's, and the four were presented as a single line of revolutionary thought. The date and maker come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
