Andrew Hull Foote was a United States Navy officer who led the Union's gunboat flotilla on the Western rivers during the Civil War. His ships helped open the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers in early 1862, and he was wounded in the attack on Fort Donelson that winter. This small card portrait, a carte-de-visite, was made in the New York studio of Mathew Brady, whose firm produced many such cards of officers and public figures during the war. The format was cheap and widely sold, so these cards let ordinary people collect and trade likenesses of the men in the news.
