Henry Inman, a New York painter known mainly for his portraits, sits here turned slightly to the left, his head and shoulders filling the half-plate frame. The likeness is attributed to Mathew Brady's studio and dated between 1844 and 1846, just before Inman died in 1846. The identification rests on an engraving of him in C. Edwards Lester's 1846 *The Artists of America*. Gold toning, applied to this daguerreotype, helped strengthen the delicate silver surface and deepen its tones, a detail worth noticing for anyone studying how these early portraits were made.
