Frank Metz is identified here as a first baseman for the Boston National League club, and the picture is one of the early baseball portraits in the Bain collection. The photographer's negative and caption cards spell the surname "Mez," and the Library of Congress record gives the date as spring 1913, based on later research by the Society for American Baseball Research. Bain News Service sold news photographs of athletes and public figures to newspapers, so portraits like this one were made to be reproduced quickly. The glass negative is also a useful reminder of how press photography worked before the rise of the small camera.
