Few pictures on this board capture a labor demonstration as directly as this wood engraving, which shows a procession of New York freight handlers during a strike in 1882. It ran in *Harper's Weekly* on July 8, 1882, on page 424, where the illustrated weeklies of the period turned newsworthy street scenes into engravings cut from artists' drawings. Strikes and processions drew steady attention in the city's press that decade, as workers pressed their demands along the busy waterfront and rail routes that moved the city's freight. The print is worth studying for its crowd and street setting, which show how labor protest looked on New York's crowded thoroughfares.
