A large eagle, painted in bold color, serves as the recruit in this 1917 poster, with the slogan "Join the Army Air Service, be an American eagle" calling young men to military aviation. Charles Livingston Bull, a painter known for his studies of wildlife, brought a naturalist's eye to the bird, which ties the appeal to national symbolism. The poster appeared the same year the United States entered the First World War, when recruiters needed images that could stop passersby. The name "Army Air Service" was formalized in 1918, so the wording reflects the aviation arm's early days.
