Printed in New York by Alpha Litho. Co. around 1917, this color lithograph carries the title "On the job for victory" and was issued under the United States Shipping Board's Emergency Fleet Corporation, the agency created to build merchant ships on a scale the country had never attempted. After the United States entered the war in April 1917, German submarine attacks had sunk large amounts of Allied shipping, so cargo vessels were in urgent demand. Posters like this one asked workers to treat shipyard and industrial labor as a patriotic duty, and its direct message is worth reading alongside that wartime pressure.
