This small head-and-shoulders daguerreotype shows Joseph Jenkins Roberts, the Virginia-born statesman who became the first president of the Republic of Liberia in 1848. Roberts, a free man of color, had emigrated to the colony in 1829 under the American Colonization Society, which was organized in 1817 to resettle Afro-Americans in Liberia. The portrait, turned slightly to the right and set in a case with a diamond of leaves at its center, survives in the society's records at the Library of Congress.
