A color lithograph measuring roughly 235 by 311 centimeters, this 1917 French poster is large enough to dominate a wall, and its catalog record names Marshal Philippe Pétain among its subjects. Pétain took command of the French armies in May 1917, after the failed Nivelle offensive had badly shaken troops and public confidence, and he set about restoring discipline and morale. Posters of this kind presented the army as orderly and united behind its leader, with French flags serving as a reminder of what the soldiers were fighting for. The translated title, *The Military Force of France*, makes the propaganda aim plain.
