Golf's popularity boomed in the United States during the 1920s, and players of both sexes were trading heavy wool and stiff collars for lighter, looser clothing on the course. The title, "Keeping cool on the golf course," points to that shift, when summer dress for sport was changing quickly. The print comes from the National Photo Company Collection, whose photographers recorded Washington, D.C., and the nation in the years before 1932. Its caption-style title and the Clothing & Dress classification suggest the picture was meant to show how golfers managed the heat through what they wore.
