Three women with golf clubs are the focus of this photograph, taken at the Jackson Sanitarium, the health resort in Dansville, New York, founded by physician James Caleb Jackson. The print is part of the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, and Johnston, a pioneering photographer, documented American women at work and at play. Around 1890, golf was still a new pastime for American women, and a resort that promoted outdoor exercise offered a natural setting for them to try it. The title and date come from old caption cards and have not been independently verified.
