Tom Vardon and Fred McLeod, both professional golfers, are the pair named in this picture's caption, and the photograph is dated to about 1909. Tom was a brother of Harry Vardon, the English champion who won the British Open six times, and the Vardon name carried weight in the golf world of the era. McLeod, a Scottish-born professional working in the United States, won the U.S. Open in 1908, which places this portrait at the height of American interest in the sport. Bain's news photographs from this period often captured players at clubs and tournaments, so the image offers a glimpse of the early professional game.
