The caption names Fred McLeod, a Scottish-born professional who won the 1908 U.S. Open at the Myopia Hunt Club in Massachusetts, though the Bain News Service title is unverified and no date is recorded. McLeod was one of many Scottish-trained pros who brought the game to American clubs, and his win was a notable moment in the sport's early American years. The Bain News Service, which supplied newspapers with pictures from about 1900 into the 1920s, made glass negatives like this one, so the plate offers a useful glimpse of how golf was photographed for the press in that era.
