Two professionals, Fred McLeod and Alex Smith, stand at the center of this picture, both Scots who built their careers in American golf. Smith won the U.S. Open in 1906 and 1910, and McLeod took the title in 1908, so the pair belonged to the top ranks of their era. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold photographs to newspapers. Its glass negatives preserve a record of early competitive golf in the United States. The record dates the negative to August 31, 1905, though the title is unverified.
