Alex Finley, named in the caption, is the player who sets this Scarsdale Golf Club match apart from other golf views in the collection. The negative is dated August 31, 1905, and comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the archive of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Bain's photographers worked largely on glass plates, which recorded fine detail but were fragile, so these negatives preserve a clear record of sporting life at turn-of-the-century clubs. The title comes from agency caption information that has not been independently verified, so the particulars of the match itself remain open to question.
