Fred McLeod, a Scottish-born golfer who settled in the United States, is the player named in this match picture, which the record dates to late August 1908. That June, McLeod won the U.S. Open at the Myopia Hunt Club in Massachusetts, making him one of the best-known professionals in the country. The image belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose New York news service sold pictures to newspapers and magazines, so it reflects the press interest in golf during the sport's early American boom. The title comes from caption data the agency recorded and has not been independently verified, so the exact occasion remains uncertain.
