Few places in the Bronx were as closely tied to early public golf as Van Cortlandt Park, whose links were laid out in the 1890s on land that had belonged to the Van Cortlandt family's colonial estate. This glass negative is part of the George Grantham Bain Collection, the Bain News Service's files of press photographs made roughly from 1900 into the early 1920s, though the record gives no date for this view. Because the agency sold pictures to newspapers and magazines, its negatives often capture everyday American recreation in an unposed way. The title comes from caption data the record describes as unverified, so the exact view should be read with that in mind.
