John McCormack, the Irish tenor, is shown here at the golf course, a pastime that drew many public figures of the early twentieth century into newspaper photographs. McCormack was one of the best-known singers of his day, with a concert career that carried him across Britain, Europe and North America, and he was also an avid golfer. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the archive of the Bain News Service, a press agency that supplied pictures of celebrities and news events to newspapers from the early 1900s through the 1910s. The record's title is taken from caption information the agency wrote on its negatives, which was not independently verified, so the exact date and setting are uncertain.
