The subject is Bernard Darwin, the British golf writer and grandson of the naturalist Charles Darwin, shown here in the middle of his swing. Darwin played competitive amateur golf before he became one of the most widely read golf correspondents of his day, writing for The Times of London and publishing many books on the game. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs made mostly in New York in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date for this negative, so the occasion itself is hard to pin down.
