The only name attached to this picture is James, and the title comes from a Bain News Service caption that has not been independently verified, so his full identity and the course remain unknown. The image survives as a glass negative in the George Grantham Bain Collection, the archive of press photographs that the New York agency produced mainly in the early twentieth century for newspapers and magazines. Golf was gaining popularity in the United States during those decades, and pictures like this one show how the sport was presented to a public eager to see it. Its small negative format and lack of a firm date make it a modest but useful record of that period.
