The sitter is named in the record as Bernard Darwin, the English golf writer and amateur player whose columns for *The Times* of London made him one of the sport's leading commentators. As a grandson of the naturalist Charles Darwin, he brought a literary polish to his writing. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs, made this glass negative, but the record gives no date, and the identification rests on caption information the agency wrote down and that has not been independently checked. Golf was a popular subject for newspaper photographers of the early twentieth century, and the Bain files hold many images of players at the game.
