This glass negative shows a man identified only as "James" swinging at a golf ball, and the title comes from caption information that the Bain News Service recorded on the negatives or caption cards, so the name has not been independently confirmed. George Grantham Bain's agency, based in New York, supplied press photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, when golf was growing rapidly as a leisure pursuit in the United States. The small 5 by 7 inch format was typical of the agency's working files, and the record gives no date, so the exact year remains uncertain. Viewers may find the plain, unposed stance of the golfer interesting as an everyday record of sport during that period.
