Tokyo, known as Edo until 1868, is the setting here, and the drawing pairs a drawbridge with foreign visitors, a combination that sets it apart from the more typical figure studies on this board. The record gives a date of 1750, but it also lists the artist, Isoda Koryūsai, as active from 1764 to 1788, and the subject tags point to 1850 to 1900, so the exact period is uncertain. Koryūsai was an Edo-based ukiyo-e artist known for elegant figures and scenes of city life. The drawing is held in the David Murray Collection at the Library of Congress, and its interest lies in how it records the meeting of Japanese urban life with Western travelers.
