A drawbridge in Tokyo, with foreign visitors among its subjects, gives this drawing its particular focus. The catalog subjects place the scene between 1850 and 1900, a period when Edo, later renamed Tokyo, was opening to Western traders and diplomats after centuries of isolation and when its bridges and canal crossings drew outside attention. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo painter and printmaker active from the 1760s to the 1780s, but its 1750 date falls before those working years, so the dating should be read with caution.
