Its catalog subjects name a drawbridge in Tokyo and foreign visitors, a pairing that sets this drawing apart from more typical views of Japanese city life. The record credits it to Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period artist active from about 1764 to 1788, but the listed date of 1750 falls before those years, and the subject headings point to 1850 to 1900, so the exact period deserves checking. Koryūsai worked within the ukiyo-e tradition of urban scenes, and by the late nineteenth century Western travelers were a growing presence in Japan's capital, so the drawing may document that shifting world.
