Printed around 1870 as a tobacco package label, this lithograph bears the title "Up in a balloon" and a copyright notice in the name of A. Seemuller. Ballooning was a popular spectacle in the later 1800s, with aeronauts drawing crowds at fairs and exhibitions, and commercial printers often borrowed such novelties to catch a buyer's eye. Labels like this one had to read quickly on a crowded shelf, so the image is built around a single playful idea. It shows how a tobacco wrapper could also carry a small piece of popular entertainment.
