Overbrook, in West Philadelphia, was home to a long-established school for blind students, and this picture places its young athletes at the center of the scene. The Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency active in New York from the early 1900s into the 1920s, made the glass negative, and its caption data supplied the title, though the record marks that information as unverified. Glass plates like this one were the standard working medium of press and commercial photographers of the period, so the image also shows the technical conditions of its time. Sports programs at schools for the blind drew public attention in those years as a way to show what disabled students could accomplish, which gives the picture a context beyond the athletic moment itself.
