Carnarvon Castle, the medieval fortress in north Wales, is the subject here, a site that has drawn visitors and photographers since the nineteenth century. The image is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, made by the Bain News Service, a Manhattan press agency that supplied news and feature pictures to American newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption cards whose accuracy the library itself has not verified, so the exact year of exposure is uncertain. Built largely from the late thirteenth century under Edward I, the castle is worth noticing for its banded stonework and polygonal towers.
