Hope Hampton was a Broadway and silent-film star, and this glass negative comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that made thousands of portraits of public figures in the early twentieth century. The studio's negatives were often labeled from its own records, so the name here is a studio attribution rather than a verified identification. Hampton's career rose during the 1910s and early 1920s, when stage performers and film actresses were among the most photographed people in the country. Glass plates like this one were the working medium of the period, and the surface streaks visible in the emulsion are a common result of age rather than a flaw in the sitting itself.
