Rudolph P. Miller's portrait is dated February 5, 1922, and survives as a glass negative, a fragile format that photographers used widely before flexible film took over. The name comes from data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and it has not been independently verified. The Washington, D.C., studio produced a large body of portraits and city views in the early twentieth century, and this negative entered the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coating and are part of the image's physical history.
