The name on this negative, Cuno Rudolph, comes from a title the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the Library of Congress has not verified it. The record places the image in the early 1920s, when the company, a Washington, D.C., studio, was producing large numbers of portraits and views on glass plates. Glass negatives like this one were prized for their sharp detail, but the light-sensitive coatings on them often deteriorated over time, leaving streaks and blemishes such as the ones noted here. The plate came to the Library as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947.
