A melodrama called *Mystery of Broadwalk Asylum* is promoted here with the promise of "thrills and chills" and a June 29 opening, sold as a horror-tinged mystery. Designed by C.E. Reynolds in 1936, the silkscreen was sponsored by the Federal theater Project, the New Deal arm of the Works Progress Administration that employed theater workers during the Depression. Its California productions were part of a wider national effort to keep stage work going and bring low-cost plays to audiences. The bold flat colors and lettering typical of WPA silkscreens were a practical choice, since the posters were cheap to print in quantity.
