Performing elephants were among the biggest draws of the American circus, and this poster puts the Lockhart elephant comedians at the center of its billing, alongside the Ringling Brothers name. The Courier Litho. Co. of Buffalo, New York, printed it in color in 1899, and firms like it produced many of the large lithographic sheets pasted up in towns along a tour's route. Such posters show how shows promoted animal acts to crowds before motion pictures existed. The date and printer come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
