This color poster advertises Mae West in person as Diamond Lil, the role she first played on Broadway in 1928, when she also wrote the play. Set in the 1890s Bowery and built around the saloon-hall singer Lil, the show made West's flamboyant, wisecracking persona famous and drew frequent complaints from censors. The poster was printed by Artcraft Lithographing & Printing Co. in New York, and its date of [1951] is an estimate, reflecting the postwar stage revivals that brought the character back to audiences.
