A volunteer cavalry troop from Brooklyn, labeled Troop C on its caption card, is pictured at Camp Alger, Virginia, around 1898. Camp Alger was one of the training grounds set up that year as the country raised volunteer regiments for the Spanish-American War, and many of the men who trained there were citizen soldiers with little military experience. The picture is a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical views meant to be seen through a stereoscope for a sense of depth, and it carries a copyright line in the name of J.F. Jarvis. The unit identification comes from the caption card and has not been independently verified.
