Pennsylvania Avenue after dark is the subject here, the broad thoroughfare that links the Capitol and the White House. The National Photo Company, which recorded Washington's streets, buildings and monuments in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative sometime between 1910 and 1935, a date range the catalog estimates from similar plates. Night views on glass required long exposures, which made them harder to get right than daytime scenes. Viewers should also notice the streaks and blemishes on the plate, which come from the natural deterioration of its original coatings rather than from the scene itself.
