Southeast Minneapolis in 1901 sat along the Mississippi River east of the falls at St. Anthony, where flour milling and lumber sawing had grown up around the water power for decades. Minneapolis was then one of the leading flour-milling cities in the country, and its mills, sawmills and rail yards drew workers from Scandinavia, Germany and Ireland, who filled neighborhoods of modest frame houses. The University of Minnesota, with its growing campus just to the east, shared these streets with millworkers, shopkeepers and boarding-house tenants. Residents knew the district for its smoke, noise and river traffic, along with the streetcar lines that carried people out from the crowded core.
