The Royal Palm Hotel stood on the Miami River in a town that was only a few years old when it opened. Henry Flagler, the Standard Oil partner who built the Florida East Coast Railway, meant it to draw wealthy winter visitors south along his rail line. Its large public rooms and broad verandas made it a social center for guests arriving by train, and it helped establish Miami as a resort destination. Hotel bars and dining rooms of this period shared a social world with the saloons and taverns grouped around it here.
