Hotel Punta Gorda stood on the shore of Charlotte Harbor on Florida's Gulf coast, and this view records the town when it was still a young resort and railroad settlement. The Punta Gorda hotel was built by Henry B. Plant, whose rail and steamship lines pushed the area into the tourist trade in the late 1880s and early 1890s. The picture is one of a set of small Kodak card photographs from about 1890, a format that made amateur snapshots of southern hotels and towns widely shared. Its informal, compact size is worth noticing alongside the more formal studio views of the same era.
