Sioux City, Iowa, is the setting for this 1936 silkscreen poster advertising a marionette play called *The Shoe Bears*, a title that hints at a bear character in the story. Federal Art Project designers produced posters like this one to promote the community theater and puppet shows that the Works Progress Administration sponsored during the Depression. The silkscreen method, which let artists print bold flat areas of color cheaply in large runs, was one of the program's signature techniques. A January 1941 date stamp on the back suggests the sheet stayed in circulation or storage for several years after it was printed.
