The title promises a remedy for scarce cash: "The Art of Making Money Plenty in Every Man's Pocket," credited to "Doctor Franklin." That credit ties the piece to Benjamin Franklin's long argument for paper currency in colonial Pennsylvania, where hard coin was in short supply and merchants and farmers often struggled to settle debts. Franklin wrote on the subject in the 1720s and 1730s, and his pamphlets were read as practical economics as much as satire. Because this wood engraving dates to 1854, more than a century after those debates, it shows how later printers and readers kept his monetary ideas in circulation.
