Taken in profile with the head turned to the right, this half-length daguerreotype shows Zachary Taylor before he became president. Mathew Brady's studio produced the plate sometime between 1844 and 1849, when Taylor was rising to fame as a general in the Mexican-American War, a reputation that carried him to the White House in 1849. The silvery image has been gold toned, a step that added warmth and helped stabilize the delicate surface. Faint numbers scratched into the face and back of the plate show it was marked during its life as an object, a detail later catalogers recorded.
