Few places in Washington tied government and living plants together as closely as the Botanic Garden on the Capitol grounds, and this 1865 stereograph records it in the year the Civil War ended. Stereo cards like this one were pairs of nearly identical photographs that, viewed through a stereoscope, merged into a single image with apparent depth, and they were enormously popular in parlors during the 1860s. The card is part of the collection of Marian S. Carson, the collector recorded with it. Look closely at the plantings and the layout of the grounds to see how the garden was arranged beside the seat of Congress.
