The United States Botanic Garden, shown here, occupied ground on the Capitol grounds at the foot of Capitol Hill, so it was closely tied to the government's work in the city. This stereograph card pairs the garden with the Capitol, which rose just beyond it. Stereograph cards like this were viewed through a stereoscope, which fused two slightly offset photographs into a single image with apparent depth. Sold widely in the 1860s, they remain a useful record of how the capital looked during and just after the Civil War.
